Samuel L. Jackson film tops box office

LOS ANGELES - Samuel L. Jackson ruled the weekend box office in North America for the second time this year with his crazy cop thriller "Lakeview Terrace," while moviegoers largely ignored three other new releases. According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, "Lakeview Terrace" sold a modest $15.6 million worth of tickets during its first three days of release. It barely surpassed the $14 million opening for Jackson's 2006 bomb "Snakes on a Plane."

Natalie Cole hospitalized in Hepatitis C setback

LOS ANGELES - Grammy Award-winning singer Natalie Cole has been hospitalized in New York after suffering a setback in her battle against Hepatitis C, her spokeswoman said on Friday. Cole, the 58-year-old daughter of legendary singer Nat King Cole, has canceled her tour dates for October but is expected to make a full recovery, the spokeswoman told Reuters. Cole's unexpected hospitalization was first reported by Entertainment Tonight.

George Michael cautioned over drugs: reports

LONDON - Pop star George Michael has been cautioned by police after being arrested for possession of drugs, news media reported on Sunday. The Sunday People newspaper said Michael, 45, was arrested in a public toilet in the north London suburb of Hampstead on Friday afternoon after being found in possession of crack cocaine and cannabis.

"Mad Men" and "John Adams" go for Emmy record books

LOS ANGELES - Two period dramas set roughly 200 years apart in American history -- "Mad Men" and and "John Adams" -- will make a run for the Emmy record books as U.S. television's highest honors are handed out on Sunday. "Mad Men," the critically acclaimed new AMC series set in New York's advertising industry at the cusp of the 1960s social revolution, is heavily favored to become the first show from a cable network other than HBO to win the Emmy for best drama.

Harry Potter author makes big political donation

LONDON - Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling has donated 1 million pounds to Britain's ruling Labor Party to provide a much-needed boost to Prime Minister Gordon Brown as he fights for political survival. After 18 months, "Hounddog" howls in movie theaters

NEW YORK - Actress Katie Holmes won praise for her debut on Broadway on Thursday night, where she was cheered on by actor husband Tom Cruise and shouted at by anti-Scientology protesters outside the theater. The drama started before the curtains went up in the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater with a group of about 20 protesters, some masked, chanting "Scientology is a cult" and "Free Katie," according to the New York Daily News.
